Zhaotong 3-Day Guide: Black-necked Cranes of Dashanbao, Wuchi Road at Doushaguan, City of Apples
Zhaotong, Yunnan's north gate, ancient "Wumeng." Winter paradise for black-necked cranes — over 1,000 cranes migrate from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau each November-March. Doushaguan preserves the Qin Dynasty "Wuchi Road" (250 BC), one of China's earliest official roads. Zhaotong is also China's southern apple capital. Seriously underrated — low prices, great scenery, pristine environment.
Day 1: Zhaotong Old City (free) → Shenggeng Park (free)
2,100 years of history — first stop where Central Plains culture entered Yunnan. Food: Zhaotong mini beef skewers coated in chili powder (1-2 RMB each, soul food of Zhaotong), roasted potatoes with chili dip (3-5 RMB), sour-spicy noodle soup with dumplings (8-12 RMB).
Day 2: Dashanbao Black-necked Crane Reserve (78 RMB, full day)
Elevation 3,000-3,364m. One of China's most important black-necked crane wintering grounds — 1,000+ cranes November-March. Also: Jigong Mountain cliff (2,600m vertical drop), alpine wetlands, grasslands. Horse riding on alpine meadows (30-50 RMB/hour). 2.5h from Zhaotong. Best before 10am for crane viewing. Winter extremely cold (-5 to 5°C) — heavy down jacket essential.
Day 3: Doushaguan Wuchi Road (50 RMB) → Departure
Preserved Qin Dynasty "Wuchi Road" (250 BC) — China's earliest "national highway." Three layers of history on the cliff: Wuchi Road, Stone Gate Pass, Tang Dynasty cliff inscription. Spectacular gorge with Guan River rushing below. 2.5h from Zhaotong.
HSR: Kunming 2h, Chengdu 3h. Budget: 500-1000 economy, 1200-2000 comfortable.
