Zhongwei 3-Day Guide: Shapotou — The Eternal Song of Desert and Yellow River
Zhongwei — desert city in western Ningxia. Shapotou is a national 5A scenic area — Tengger Desert meets the Yellow River here, golden dunes pressing against the riverbank, creating the scene Wang Wei immortalized: "A lone smoke plume rises straight in the vast desert, the setting sun rounds over the long river." Sheepskin rafts are the Yellow River's oldest transport — inflated sheep bladders lashed to wooden frames, navigating rapids for 2,000 years. Straw checkerboard sand fixation is China's masterpiece of desert conquest — 1m square straw grids planted in dunes, vegetation takes root and fixes shifting sand, making desert railways possible. Gaomiao Temple is one of the Northwest's finest ancient building complexes. Three days of desert-river grandeur.
Day 1: Shapotou — The Eternal Wonder of Desert and River
Full Day: Shapotou Scenic Area (Ticket: ¥80, includes shuttle)
Morning: Yellow River Zone
- 🐏 Sheepskin Raft (¥90): The Yellow River's oldest transport — sit on inflated sheepskins floating downstream, raftsmen singing "Hua'er" (folk songs), river surging beneath. ~30 min
- 🌉 Glass Bridge (¥30): Transparent bridge spanning the Yellow River
- ⛵ Yellow River Zipline (¥100): Fly from one bank to the other
Afternoon: Desert Zone
- 🏜️ Camel Ride (¥100): Classic desert experience
- 🎿 Sand Sliding (¥30): Slide down 100m dunes — Shapotou's sand "sings" (singing sand)
- 🚁 Desert ATV (¥150-200): Off-road vehicles between dunes
Evening: Shapotou Sunset — Stand atop dunes watching sunset. Yellow River winds below, golden light flooding desert and river. This is Wang Wei's scene come to life.
Day 2: Route 66 → North Changtan → Gaomiao Temple
Morning: Zhongwei Route 66 (Free, drive or charter)
"China's Route 66" — a highway through wilderness, Gobi and Yellow River canyons on both sides. 40km to North Changtan. Most dramatic: highway through narrow canyon with towering cliffs. Perfect for driving and photos.
Afternoon: North Changtan Ancient Village (Free)
Best-preserved ancient village on the Yellow River — Ming-Qing era buildings along the riverbank, ancient pear trees. Spring: pear blossoms like snow. Villagers still use sheepskin rafts to cross the river. No commercial development — authentic Northwest rural life. 30min from Shapotou.
Evening: Gaomiao Temple (¥20)
One of the Northwest's finest ancient complexes — founded Ming Dynasty Yongle period, combining Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Most unique: underground "Hell" exhibition with sculptures depicting 18 levels of hell — extremely rare in Chinese temples. Layered architecture with flying eaves, magnificent in sunset.
Food: Haozi noodles (wormwood seed noodles, unique fragrance, ¥8-12), Shapotou mutton (Yellow River sheep, ¥40-60/jin), twisted sanzi (¥10-15/jin), braised snacks (¥15-20).
Day 3: Tengger Desert Interior → Departure
Full Day: Tengger Desert Deep Experience (requires advance booking, charter ¥400-600)
Go beyond the edge into the real desert: desert sunrise (wake in tents, climb dunes), camel caravan (2-3 hours deep into desert), desert lakes (400+ lakes in Tengger, called "Desert of a Thousand Lakes"), camping under the Milky Way (zero light pollution).
Alternative (no deep desert): Gaomiao Temple → Zhongwei Museum (free, sand fixation history).
